RTE admission: 50% of seats still vacant in Trichy
Not even a single seat that is reserved for the students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has been filled in 13 schools in Trichy district. Only one or two seats have been filled in most of the schools and all the rest are remaining vacant.
About 50% of the seats are still vacant, according to the list that the directorate of matriculation schools released. Out of 106 schools in the district, only 39 have completely filled up the seats.
About 2,088 vacancies have to be filled up in these 106 schools. The admissions for RTE began almost two months ago and have still not been completed. One of the biggest contributing factors to this delay is the lack of awareness about RTE among rural parents. Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, Private schools must set apart 25% of their seats for the children whose family’s annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh.
"The admissions process is still underway and schools are being constantly monitored. By the end of August, a clear picture on all the RTE admissions can be obtained," said education officials in the district education department.
"All the schools have been asked to list the number of vacancies under RTE outside their schools and authorities have been involved in monitoring the admissions." said a senior official from the IMS.
