Higher education pursued by only 0.56 percent of the disabled students: survey
A recently conducted survey has revealed that only 0.56 percent of students with disabilities are pursuing higher education in the country.
The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) survey on employment over the past two decades show the percentage of people with disabilities working in public sector to be around 1 percent and in the private sector to be around 0.5 percent.
To know the status of the students with disabilities in colleges and universities across India, the annual survey of NCPEDP was conducted.
On Thursday, to mark the 20 years of the Disability Act of 1995, the NCPEDP launched a campaign called ‘Equity+20’.
The positive affect of the 1995 law, through 20 ‘stories of change’ shall be showcased in Equity+20.
Honorary director, NCPEDP, Javed Abidi said, "While these may seem like very dismal figures, and at some level they are, but we have to be cognizant of the fact that India started from below zero before the 1995 Act."
