‘Digital Earth’ programme to be introduced by IIT Kharagpur
A new course shall be introduced by IIT Kharagpur called ‘Digital Earth’. This programme is an amalgamation of certain key themes of chemical engineering, geophysics, mining engineering, geology and computer engineering.
Various themes and major issues related to the problems of earth sciences and providing remedial technological solutions for them is the objective of this programme. Study and collection of data on mangroves, siltation, tides etc. and potential hazards will be a part of this programme.
The approval from the Ministry of Earth Sciences is been awaited as of now. The ministry shall be reviewing the programme and all the cost incurred on setting up the facility. The estimated cost for the required equipment and facility shall be about Rs. 100 crore.
The pilot study shall be conducted in a suburban area with the limited available data.
Based on this programme, IIT Kharagpur will also introduce micro-specialization courses in Bangalore to its alumni and industry executives working in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Bhubaneswar. The intake for the same will be around 60 students.
