Mumbai University Colleges can increase seats by 5%
Mumbai University will allow the colleges affiliated to it to increase their seats by five percent. The colleges must satisfy all the criteria laid down by the university in order to be able to do so.
The university has earlier allowed the colleges to increase their intakes for traditional courses by 10% and professional courses by 20%. This has been done to ensure that no student is left without a seat in degree colleges. A circular released by the university on August 10 invites interested colleges to apply for additional seats, which can be done till August 14.
Last month, when the university allowed colleges to increase the seats, around 200 colleges had applied for additional seats. Except 10-15 applications, which did not satisfy the eligibility criteria for additional seats, applications from all other colleges were sanctioned by the university.
MA Khan, registrar of the university said, "Since the class XII results have been good across boards, the government and university felt the need to increase the capacity to accommodate all students. The colleges, however, cannot increase their divisions, not increase work load on teachers and also can not be a liability on the government."
