Tamil Nadu: Surge in internships at startups
Startups in MSME (Micro, small and medium enterprises) sector in Tamil Nadu, are increasingly offering internship opportunities to college graduates. About two-thirds of interns in the state are now interning with start-ups. Now-a-days, Interns are increasingly seen as important resources by start-ups and small scale businesses as they need to get their work done with the limited available resources.
According to a report by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tamil Nadu has 8.44 lakh registered micro, small and medium enterprises. The number of SMEs in the state has seen a significant increase since 2003. The demand for internships has been consistently increasing in Tamil Nadu, especially in manufacturing, IT and outsourcing services.
A study conducted over the recent trends in internships in India stated that about 68% of Indian college students who interned in companies were offered a job prospect by the end of their internships. Fresh graduates are getting opportunities to do internship in the top sectors such as Information Technology, internet companies, computer hardware and software, media, marketing, advertising, retail and NGOs.
The internship roles for fresh graduates in technical positions are software, web design and development, graphic design, mobile app and product development whereas non-technical positions included content writing, journalism, marketing, sales and business development, market research and analytics.
