Top 10 Indian Universities in QS World University Rankings
QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), an organization that has been providing rankings for the universities located worldwide, has come up with the latest rankings of the top universities for 2015-16. United States leads the chart with the most number of universities coming up in the top 200’s and it is followed by United Kingdom. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been able to maintain its first rank this year as well; it is closely followed by Harvard University and University of Cambridge.
This year, two of the Indian universities have also been enlisted in the top 200 universities by QS. Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi have been placed on 147th and 179th ranks respectively. IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur have been placed in between ranks 200 and 300. University of Delhi has been placed between ranks 481and 490.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a prestigious institute situated in Bangalore. This institute is one of the two Indian institutes ranked amongst top 200 universities worldwide. It has secured 147th rank in QS World University Ranking 2015 and secured 34th position in Asian University Ranking. This institute started its journey in the year 1909 and is now functioning with 39 educational departments, 3500 students and a total of 500 academic and scientific staff, supported by 600 administrative personnel. It has a strong team of highly experienced, qualified and eminent educational experts.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-D) is a leading engineering institute in the country that has been placed on 179th rank by QS. This institute was established in the year 1961, as a center of excellence for advanced training, research and development in science and engineering & technology in the country. IIT Delhi is the second Indian institute that has been enlisted in the top 200 universities, as per QS World University Ranking 2015 and it has also secured 13th rank in BRICS ranking. The campus of this institute is spread over an area of 325 acres and offers excellent infrastructural facilities to support the academic development of the students.
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was founded in the year 1958 and was set up by an Act of Parliament. IIT-B has been given 202nd rank in QS World University Rankings 2015 and it also obtained 42nd position in Asian University Rankings category. This institute attracts best students from the country for its undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Research and academic programmes in this institute are supervised and directed by an excellent team of eminent faculty members. The campus of this institute is spread over an area of 550 acres and is also equipped with excellent infrastructure.
IIT-M (Indian Institute of Technology-Madras), a premier institute established by the Government of India at Chennai, Tamil Nadu has been ranked 254th in the QS World University Rankings for 2015-16. This ISO certified institute came into existence in the year 1959 with the motto “Effort Yields Success”. This institute was established to provide quality education and research facility in engineering and technology. It has 550 faculty members, 8000 students and more than 1250 administrative & supporting staff.
IIT-K (Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur), located at Kanpur, has been ranked 271st in the QS World University Rankings; it has been ranked 58th in the Asian University Rankings category. This engineering institute is spread over an area of 1200 acres of land. It has 325 faculty members, 2288 Undergraduate & 1522 Postgraduate students and more than 900 supporting staffs. It is one of the first IIT’s which offered computer science education to students. It was established in the year 1959 by the Government of India under IIT act to provide quality education and research facility in engineering and technology.
IIT-Kharagpur has been placed on the 286th position in the QS World University Rankings this year. This institute is spread over an area of 1200 acres of land. It has 470 academic staff, 4500 Undergraduate & 2500 Postgraduate students and more than 24000 administrative staffs. It started functioning in the year 1951 with a motto “Excellence in action is Yoga. Some of the departments of the Institute are Aerospace Engineering, Biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering and electrical engineering.
Indian Institute of Technology–Roorkee was established in the year 1847. It is one of the best institutes for higher education in the field of engineering. The Institute is ranked 391st in the QS World Rankings and ranked 43rd in the BRICS Rankings category. The institute imparts various bachelor’s degree courses in various disciplines, 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. IIT-Roorkee, which was on 461st rank in 2014, has jumped almost 70 ranks to attain the 391st rank this year.
Indian Institute of Technology- Guwahati was established in the year in 1994. The institute offers various courses such as BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, M.Tech, M.Sc and PhD. The institute has been ranked between 451 and 460 in the QS World University Rankings and it has also been ranked 98th in Asian University Rankings category. The institute has state of the art infrastructure, all of which aims to brighten the academic experience of the students.
Delhi University was established in the year 1922. It is one of country’s most famous universities known for its high standards in teaching and quality research education. The university has been placed in between 481 and 490 ranks in the QS World University Rankings and it has also been given 46th rank in BRICS Rankings category. The University of Delhi is one of the largest universities in India. The university offers various postgraduate, undergraduate, Certificate/Diploma/Advanced Diploma and research level programmes. DU, which was on 421st position last year, has lost its ground and has ended up in between 481 and 490.
The University of Calcutta has been ranked between 601 and 650 in the QS World University rankings 2015. It is also ranked 149th in the Asian University Rankings category this year. It is recognized as a “Five- star University” and a “Centre with potential for Excellence” by the University Grants commission and the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). It started functioning in the year 1857. There are 3715 Undergraduate and 15750 Postgraduate students at this institute. It is the first Indian university which adopted the pattern of the University of London.
