IITs to waive course fee for physically challenged students
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has decided to waive the course fee for the students with physical disabilities. This decision was made by the IIT council during a meeting headed by Human and Resource Development minister Smiriti Irani on Tuesday.
The council has established a committee to find a solution for the proposal to increase the course fees of IITs from INR 90,000 to INR 2.5 lakh to recover the periodic cost such as equipment, staff salary, housekeeping, labs, water and electricity of institute.
"The minister insisted that the interests of socially and economically weaker sections should be protected at all costs. She said a fee hike is a sensitive issue and cannot be rushed into. IITs will look into the fee hike issue again," a source said.
As per the IIT joint admission board's (JAB) proposal, the council has also decided to increase the quota of students appearing for JEE (advanced) from 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh.
