Institute Description

Immediately after independence the Government of West Bengal proposed to establish a full-fledged Government College with the purpose of offering accessible opportunities of higher studies to the general people of Darjeeling Hills. The gracious St. Michael's School building, constructed in 1904 and spread over the slope between the Lebong Cart Road and Birch Hill road ( VIP Road) on the west flank of Birch Hill (renamed'Jawahar Parbat') was made available for the purpose and Darjeeling Government College was established in 1948 to open a new era in the field of higher education in the hills.Over the years some courses were upgrated and new courses introduced here. Honours course in Nepali was introduced in this College for the first time any where in the world. The post Graduate Departments of Botany and Zoology have undertaken several research projects in collaboration with the Department ofScience and Technology and Department of Forest, Government of West Bengal, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. University Grants Commission. USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, World Health Organisation etc. A large number of research scholars are pursuing their research work in these projects. So far fifteen scholars have obtained Ph. D. degree in Botany and Zoology from the Institution. It is worth mentioning that the Department of Zoology publishes its own Research Journal of Bengal Natural History Society (New Series), contributed to by national and international scientists. It is funded by the Government of West Bengal.
