Institute Description

The University of Hyderabad, a premier institution of postgraduate teaching and research in the country, was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No.39 of 1974) on 2nd October, 1974. It is the first Central University to have been established in southern India.  In addition to federal funding, it receives substantial research funding and support from other sources at home and abroad, and attracts the best students and faculty from all over India.

The university is located on the old Hyderabad-Bombay Highway, about 20 km from the city of Hyderabad. Stretching across a serene and green stretch of 2,300 acres of land, the campus houses academic and administrative wings, support facilities and residential requirements of the campus community constructed over the years.  The campus in the city, The Golden Threshold, the residence of late Sarojini Naidu, was bequeathed to the university by her daughter, late Padmaja Naidu.   The Centre for Distance Education has started functioning on the campus in 1994 as sister organization to offer post-graduate diploma programmes of one year duration through distance mode.Majority of the participants are drawn from academicians, industrialists, bureaucrats, other central government and state government employees and unemployed youth from different parts of India. The Centre for Distance Education is located in the L-shaped building opposite Lake View Guest House, near the University Post Office.
