Institute Description

Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC), was established and maintained by the Christian Medical College Vellore Association. The purpose of the Christian Medical College is to train the dedicated persons to run, manage and provide health care in the spirit of Christ through the mission hospitals. 

  • Managed by the Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a registered society, formed by over 50 different Indian Christian churches and Christian organizations which run over 225 hospitals, health centers and dispensaries throughout the country.
  • The present town campus was acquired in 1924 and a 267 bed hospital was built. The Christian Medical College, Vellore, began in 1918, when Dr. Scudder started training female for the Licentiate Diploma (LMP). The first batch of male students were admitted in 1947 and permanent affiliations to the Madras University was done in 1950.
  • From 1953 onwards 50 students were admitted (25 men and 25 women).In 1964 the annual admissions were increased to 60 and in 2012 it was increased to 100.
  • The CMC, Vellore, occupies a unique place among medical institutions in India (and in the world) as a vital, diverse and inter-denominational community.
  • For Christian students applying under the sponsored category, a written test in Bible will be a part of the tests at Vellore. Admission to the programme for the year is subject to being certified medically fit by the Medical board of Christian Medical College, Vellore.
  • The number of candidates for the MBBS course shall be 100 per year, of which not less than 42 shall be women.
  • The college offers MBBS, 66 post graduate diploma and degree medical courses (MS & MD), 35 Allied Health Science courses, super specialty medical courses (DM & M.Ch), Master of Science, Bachelor of Science and diploma. A total of about 2000 students are enrolled per year.
  • The college currently offers 18 higher specialty courses. In addition, Masters Courses are offered in the specialties of Biostatistics, Public Health, Epidemiology, Bioengineering and Clinical Engineering.
  • CMC also runs about 18 degree and 24 diploma programs and 2 fellowship courses in the Allied Health Sciences.
  • Several notable contributions have been made to medical science in the fields of Leprosy, Rehabilitation and Reconstructive Surgery, , Neuro-physiology,  Neurochemistry Gastroe, nterology, Microbiology, Growth and Development, Population studies, Hematology, Oncology and Virology.


The final distribution of seats is as follows

  1. All India Open – 16 seats. 

  2. Sponsored Candidates - 84 seats.

  3. Selection is based on merit. It consists of two steps. A preliminary written test (Step-1) consisting of multiple choice questions is conducted in English, on an All India basis. This is followed by Step-2 for short-listed candidates which consists of special tests to assess the candidate’s character and aptitude. Interviews also will form part of assesment at this stage


  • Research is an integral part of the institution. Research is oriented to areas of need and emphasizes application to relevant problems. The work on leprosy, AIDS, Tropical sprue, diarrhea in children and immunization are examples of such need based research.


CMC has performed the First Successful Open Heart Surgery in India in 1961, the first Middle-ear Microsurgery in India also in 1961, established the first Rehabilitation Institute in India in 1966, and performed the first Kidney Transplant in India in 1971 and India's first Bone Marrow Transplant in 1986.


Library: Well stocked medical libraries exist in both the hospital and college campuses. Scientific journals, MEDLINE system for literature search, internet and reprographic facilities are available in the libraries. There is a well-organized Medical Records Library in the institution as well as a departmental records system. Facilities are provided in these areas for trainees to conduct retrospective case studies from the records. Library service also includes online access to reading journals.

Medical Facilities: The town campus houses the main hospital where any of the students can avail medical facilities as per their need.  CMC has over 7,600 staff, including over 1,200 doctors and 2,400 nurses. Almost every clinical specialty is catered to.

  • 2600 beds are available for in-patients and over 6000 outpatients are treated daily in the main hospital and in peripheral units.

Infrastructure: There are two main campuses - one, the main campus at the heart of Vellore city, and the other at Bagayam, which is about 7 km from the main campus. CMC has over 7,600 staff, including over 1,200 doctors and 2,400 nurses.Facilities for tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, cricket, hockey and table tennis are available within the campus itself. 


CMC students annually organize and host the Pegasus, Cognito and Epidauria. These fest are completely manages by the students of the college along with helpful guidance from the faculty.


  • India Today ranked CMC at second position in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
  • Outlook India ranked CMC at third in 2012.
  • In 2011, the hospital was awarded two awards by the ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company and CNBC-TV18, one for the ‘Best multi-specialty (non-metro area) and the other for the ‘Best cardiology’ care in India.
  • National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission run by the Government of India, gave a five star rating to CMC for the quality of education imparted by it.
  • International Living Award was awarded by Le Bonheur Healthcare, USA in 2008.
  • CMC is the home of the South Asian Cochrane Network and Centre and is also an internationally recognized Infectious Diseases Training and Research Centre.


Despite the extensive medical services provided by the hospitals and community outreach, the mission statement makes it clear that CMC’s primary concern is education, training and professional development. There is a commitment to ensure that the cost of education should not be a barrier to anyone desiring to pursue a course at CMC. Students who find it difficult to meet even these low fees are encouraged to apply for scholarships which are available for all undergraduate courses (Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences). Scholarships are awarded according to economic need and cover all or part of the fees and accommodation costs. Scholarships are available for deserving candidates following an assessment.

Residing in the hostel is mandatory for students of MBBS, BSc Nursing and Diploma in nursing courses.Students are required to vacate their accommodation within 2 weeks of finishing their course.
