The Madurai Kamaraj University is one of the oldest universities of the country. It was founded in the 1965 at Madurai, Tamilnadu. The name of the university was also named after the historical city of Madurai. Initially, the name of the university was Madurai University. But later on, it was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University. The university had added the name of Karmaveerar K. Kamaraj who was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, in its name. Shri Kamaraj was a visionary leader and had brought several radical reforms in the education system in the state.
The university provides excellent research facility for its students. It awards Doctoral Degrees to its research scholars. The research programs of the university are funded by UGC, CSIR, DBT, DST ICSSR, MHRD etc.
Academic Centers and Information Centers
The university has its own Academic Centers and Information Centers. These centers are located in Madurai, Chennai, Trichy, Theni, Ramnad, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. The university has also established Study Centers in all other states of the nation. The students and aspirants can get the University Bulletin for free of cost from the Director, Directorate of Distance Education.
The Central Library of the university has over 2,00,000 books. The library is well equipped with high speed one GBPS internet connection, INFONET center. It has also smart class rooms that are enhanced by ICT enabled teaching and learning system.
The university has five Men's Hostels and three Women's Hostels of its own. The students of Post Graduate programs, M.Phil program and Research Scholars of University can avail the hostel facility here.

The university is providing residential quarters for the Married Research Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows.
